Community Engagement

… encouraging participation

With community groups and associations becoming more sophisticated and media savvy, genuine consultation is not only appreciated – it is expected.

And the community knows what they want.

They are increasingly demanding a greater say in infrastructure, city planning, new projects and policy development. As consumers, the community has a right to be involved in the decision-making process of essential services such as education, health and community services.

Today, community engagement has evolved from ‘holding one public meeting’ to a strategic process designed to actively seek participation and provide and collect relevant information.

Organisations must take a proactive and planned approach to community engagement, using a range of consultation tools to develop a campaign that is inclusive, transparent and successful.

When done well, the results form community engagement empowers organisations with vital information to make lasting decisions. Better decisions.

BBS has worked on some of Queensland largest infrastructure projects including the Millennium Arts Project (new State Library and Gallery of Modern Art), South Bank Institute Redevelopment (Queensland’s first Public Private Partnership), Whitsunday Wastewater Project and the Mackay Convention Centre.

Our community engagement team has also worked on projects designed to influence urban planning and policy development in education, health and community services.

BBS has also won the Public Participation Process Award by the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) – the highest community engagement award in Australasia. The award was won for BBS’ work with Brisbane City Council’s CityShape Conference, part of Council’s Neighbourhood Planning process to create a new city plan.
